Project WR708-2009: A Helping Hand for Schools

This project provides educational and vocational support to students in Laos schools. The project aims to help Australian students to become more culturally aware and empowered through our website (ahelpinghand.org.au) which provides links between Australian students to Laos school projects.

Sponsor Club: RC of Mill Point (D9465)
Project Manager: Dr. Rachel Sheffield (RC of Mill Point)
Partner Org.: Women's International Group (WIGS) and Community Learning International (CLI) in Laos

The Helping Hands website provides a direct link between children in Laos schools and children in local Australian schools.

The project seeks to address the need for funding to help repair and support Laos schools, and for Australian students to be aware and feel empowered that their actions can make a difference in the world.

One of the aims for Australian students is to encourage compassion and empathy with children in other nations and circumstances, encouraging tolerance and promoting peace.  It also enables students to demonstrate values that link to the current curriculum framework in school education.

The Laos students are from K-12 (ages 6-17 years) in a wide number of primary and secondary schools in and around the Lao capital, Vientiane, and the second biggest city, Luang Prabang.

The project will provide toilet blocks, build classrooms and send supplies to enable students to attend school and provide them with necessary tools and life skills.
